STEPS TO OBTAIN A LICENSE TO CARRY A CONCEALED WEAPON
- Contact the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office to obtain a list of Certified Instructors in the county or other area of the state who are authorized to teach the required course. Instructor list available at Office.
- Enroll in a one day training class conducted by the Certified Instructor.
- Within 5 working days after completing the course, the Certified Instructor forwards information regarding the applicant’s pass or fail training status to the Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) in Richmond, Ky.
- Within 15 days of receiving information from the Certified Instructor, the DOCJT will, if the applicant successfully completed the training, issue a Certificate of Training to you. (Be sure you keep this Certificate of Training). If the applicant fails the training the DOCJT will notify the applicant they will not be certified.
- Applicant submits the following to the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office (8am – 4pm, M-F)
- State of Kentucky Drivers License or Official photo and proof of Kentucky Residency
- Your Original Training Certificate plus a copy (we can make a copy for you at the Sheriff’s Office for a fee - (see fee chart below)
- Separate photo for the application. The photo you bring must be a 4” x 3 ½” or a 4” x 5” shoulder shot taken against a light colored wall. You may not wear a hat or tinted glasses in the photo. A passport type photo is preferred.
- $40.00 application fee- check or money order made payable to Kentucky State Treasurer
- $20.00 application fee- cash, check or money order payable to Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office
- $1.00 for copy of your Training Certificate (if needed)
- Within 5 working days the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office will transmit your application and accompanying material to the Kentucky State Police (KSP).
- The KSP will conduct a background check and issue or deny the license within 90 days.
- KSP will mail your “Flash Pak” to you notifying you to pick up your license at the Sheriff’s Office. Please pay extra attention that you check your mail thoroughly as not to throw your “Flash Pak” in the trash. You must bring your “Flash Pak” with you to the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office to pick up your license. Once you pick up your license you may then carry a weapon concealed.

$15.00 | late fee for expired CCDW renewals
$15.00 | Fee to replace lost license
$1.00 | Copy of Training Certificate (if you do not bring a copy of your original)
Special Notice
Applicants who are peace officers currently certified by KLEC, or a retired peace officer who is a member of KERS, SPRS, CERS, or other retirement system operated by a city, county, or urban county in Ky., do not have to meet the training requirements or pay license fee. STEPS TO RENEW YOUR CCDW
- A “Flash Pak” will be mailed to you to the address currently on your CCDW license up to 120 days before your license is due to expire. If the address on your CCDW is not where you are currently residing you will need to come to the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office to complete a change of address form. You will not be able to renew your license without your “Flash Pak”.
- Bring your “Flash Pak”, along with:
- State of Kentucky Drivers License or Official photo and proof of Kentucky Residency
- Separate photo for the application (we can take a passport type photo for you at the Sheriff’s Office for a fee) If you decide to bring your own photo to use- it must be a 4 X 3 ½ or a 4 X 5 shoulder shot taken against a light colored wall (a passport photo is acceptable). You may not wear a hat or tinted glasses in the photo.
- $40.00 application fee- check or money order made payable to Kentucky State Treasurer. If your license has expired there will be a $15.00 late fee if it has been expired less than one year.
